How to eliminate CD autorun in CentOS 4

Upon inserting a CD/DVD under CentOS 4 KDE will automatically detect it and open its file manager. This is a really inconvenient behavior under some circumstanses. For example, if a CD is being burned and verified, upon starting the verification process the CD will be ejected and reloaded, thereby detected as new by the system and read both by the file manager and the verificating process. This would be fine, except it's not: some Linux kernels issue an Oops in this situation. Also, I personally dislike my system guessing what I want to do: I might want the CD to be read by a virtualized environment but not by the main Linux environment, for example. So here's how to disable this annoying behavior:

# rpm -e autorun

$ rm -f ~/.kde/Autostart/Autorun.desktop
$ killall autorun
